How this book was born:
The inspiration to write this book was simply to have a bit of fun. After a divorce and slogging through a couple of dreary years, I realized that the greatest luxury in life might be to have a good laugh.
After various failed attempts at dating and career misfires, I started to see some humor in the situation. I figured other women out there must have been facing similar struggles as they tried to weave their lives back together. The idea for a book began to form. I started talking to friends about their experiences dating in Los Angeles, which has to be one of the most surreal places to date. Everyone looks perfect and they’re all very busy pretending their lives are perfect- but it’s not real. The complicated ingredients of what a life is like post-divorce were thrown into the pot – and out came Synchronized Breathing.
Everyone feels like a failure if her marriage implodes, but it’s what you do next that counts. Writing this book saved me in a lot of ways. It gave me hope and something to do that was all my own and a world I could disappear into. I could cook up outrageous characters and laugh myself silly in the process. I didn’t anticipate that by taking this step, other aspects in my life would transform. It was almost as if by the sheer act of writing it, a kind of alchemy was created that seeped into my own life and improved it. That being said, it has been a very long journey to publication. Years rolled by while I worked on this book, put it away and then kept being called back to it. Now it is time to share it.
My hope is that other women going through challenging times will share a laugh with Scarlett and perhaps relate to her missteps on the path to love.
