Doing final edits this week!
A (male) friend of mine that read one of my early drafts of Synchronized Breathing a few years ago, asked me why the guys were such cads in it. I’ve thought a lot about that question since. It certainly was not my intention to offend anyone – the sheer purpose and function of this book is entertainment. But since he is a very good writer and I respect his opinion, I did want to take a look at it. After a lot of reflection, I came to the realization that the simple truth is that sometimes the jerks are more fun to write about. As women, before we have selected our mate (and to a much lesser degree afterwards), the aftermath of a date – good or bad – is a subject we like to kick around. It’s fun. There’s a lot of uncertainty involved. Will he or won’t he call? Can you believe he said that? Do you think there’s a future? I wanted to recreate that with the reader and take them along as Scarlett dates and let them be the girlfriend forming opinions about the potential boyfriends as the book progresses. Are any of them longterm candidates? I wanted to let the reader feel like one of Scarlett’s girlfriends and achieve that intimate tone on a larger scale. I guess we will find out in November if women will feel invested in her journey!
